because they are just starting to feel their emotions from a
pyschological perspective but no idea how to understand their
meaning much less control them.
It was teaching martial arts that shifted my strategy.
I did not want to train my students to turn off all their
emotions.
Fortunately, I’ve had a lot of great coaches over the years and

what Anger was.
I learned what Fear was.
I worked out some theories about how they work and why they
worked – and some techniques for dealing with them.

Most people think you either have
it or you don’t, and that’s that.
Those who do are
considered intuitive, social, sensitive, perceptive or very
relational.
Those who don’t are just considered ordinary, and some oblivious
people are considered insensitive jerks or brutes.
Are Women Better At Recognizing and
Dealing With Emotions Than Men?
Women are commonly
perceived to be better at reading emotions than men.

In fact, many men
report that they do not even know what they are feeling.
Men are often thought
to manage their emotions better than women, stereotypically
because they do not feel their emotions as deeply.

Most
people have had the feeling of having “mixed emotions,”
“conflicted emotions,” or feeling “numb” (which we often think
of as “no emotions”).
Sometimes we think of
that as “I don’t really know how I feel.”
Some people have such powerful
default emotions (anger, depression) that they don’t seem to
know what else they might be feeling.
Most emotions just seem to fall into
a few categories:

I feel good

I feel fine
-
I feel bad
That’s not much Emotional Intelligence.
Why Happiness Seems So Elusive
As important as it is to all of us, happiness is difficult to
achieve and harder to hold.
Why is that?
Part of it is a poor understanding of what happiness is and how
it works.
At it’s most simple, Happiness is when our Happiness Rules are
being fulfilled.
I know that saying that doesn’t help a lot of people, so let me
explain.
Our emotions will tell us when those rules are being met: we
feel “happy.”
It’s finding out those rules that becomes the challenge.
It starts here: Pleasure is Not Happiness.
These are two different things.
You can experience pleasure and feel happy one time and not feel
happy another time.
One way you can tell is how you feel when the pleasure is over.
You must understand that that pursuit of happiness is not the
same as the pursuit of pleasure.
In fact, the pursuit of pleasure can often lead to negative
emotions – Guilt being a common one.
There are certainly pleasures you can indulge in that will leave
you feeling guilty afterwards.
Some guilty pleasures sabotage other important goals, such as
developing a healthy and fit physique, protecting our important
relationships, or any other goals we have that require restraint
and discipline.
Pleasure can sometimes lead to happiness, and sometimes it leads
to misery.

Less Guilt = More Happiness: A Simple
Formula To Get There
Guilt is part of the Language of Emotions.
It’s there to tell you when you’ve done something
wrong: something so wrong that it goes to the heart of your
identity.
You feel bad because you feel that the thing you
did or are doing says something to you about you – and it’s
something you do not want to be true.
Most of us have never really thought of guilt
that clearly before, but once said it resonates with people.
They do feel the “I’m bad” feeling, and they feel
it “because of…” and that “because” haunts them.
Women often feel it because they can’t seem to do
their jobs, take care of their kids, take care of their
husbands, prepare meals, look sexy, and, and, and…
From what I’ve seen of men, it is most often
because of something they’ve done in the past that still haunts
them today – something they can never take back, or even
something that, at the time, was the right thing to do (like
kill people in the line of duty during military service).
The most thorough way to eliminate this Guilt is
to change the rules your heart lives by.
Stop trying to do the impossible.
Stop trying to be everything all the time.

force.
They may use physical force, verbal force or manipulation to try
to make other people do things their way.
Will that get them their way in the short term?
Probably.
Just like yanking your hand away will protect your hand.
But what will it do the relationship?
It will damage the relationship!
That could lose clients, lose co-workers, lose jobs, lose
friends or lose romances and marriages!
The Self-Protection Reaction is there for that moment
of safety.
Then you must pause to consider the best course of
action.
Even if all you ever learn is that emotions are a
language and the very first thing your emotions prompt is a
self-protection reaction and you need to make a wiser decision –
you just boosted your Emotional Intelligence!
Here’s a Fundamental Concept: Emotions are a Language
What you feel
has a specific meaning that is very consistent.
Every time you feel anger, it is
delivering exactly the same message.
Every
time you feel fear, that is also a specific message.
So is hopelessness, overwhelm,
doubt and guilt.
For that matter, happiness always
means the same thing too!
The
Skills and Training You Need To Experience What "Living" Is
Really Like

Perceive Emotions
If you actually know
what the emotions MEAN, then you can decipher your own feelings
even if they seem distant (you’re numb) or there are a lot of
emotions mixed together (mixed or conflicted emotions).
This messes up your
ability to perceive emotions.
The Language of Emotions training
transforms your ability to perceive feelings.
You shift from trying to figure out a
seeming messy, shapeless, fuzzy feeling to looking for a
message.
When you see the message, the
emotion suddenly makes sense.
Are you feeling angry or frustrated?

If you know the difference between those feelings, you can

Understand Emotions
Understanding becomes obvious once you know what to look for.
Once you know what the emotions mean because you know the
Language of Emotions, you open up your natural understanding
flow pattern in the brain.
In fact, you used your understanding to help you perceive your
emotions in the first place.
The understanding of your own emotions instantly translates into understanding the
emotions of others: your boss, co-workers, clients, family and
friends.

Manage Emotions
Managing Emotions is a two-fold skill.
First, there are skills to do what is called Instant
State Change.

Second is long term emotional state change.
